Step 1 – Turn Off Your Inverter

  • Locate your inverter, which is usually situated in your garage or on an exterior wall.
  • Lift open the bottom panel of the inverter to reveal the AC/DC toggle switch.
  • Turn off your inverter by switching the toggle to the “Off” position.

Step 2 – Turn Off Your AC Disconnect (If Applicable)

Some solar systems have an AC disconnect. If your system includes one, follow these steps –

  • Look for a gray box with a black or red handle, which is your AC disconnect, typically located in the garage.
  • Turn off the AC disconnect by switching it to the “Off” position.

Step 3 – Turn Off Your Solar Disconnect Box

The solar disconnect box is usually found near the solar meter. 

  • Locate the gray utility disconnect box with a black or red handle.
  • Turn off the solar disconnect box by switching the toggle to the “Off” position. Be prepared for a potentially loud popping sound.

Step 4 – Turn Off Your Electrical Service Panel

The electrical service panel powers your solar system. 

  • Identify the main breaker(s) labeled as “Photovoltaic” on your electrical service panel.
  • Turn off the main breaker(s).

Step 5 – Wait for 30 Seconds

After shutting off all the components, wait for 30 seconds. This pause is essential before reactivating your solar system.

Step 6 – Turn On Your Electrical Service Panel

Reversing the shutdown process is crucial. To turn your electrical service panel back on, turn on the main breaker(s).

Step 7 – Turn On Your Solar Disconnect Box

Next, you need to reactivate the solar disconnect box. Go back to the gray utility disconnect box and turn it on. Again, you’ll hear a loud popping sound.

Step 8 – Turn On Your AC Disconnect (If Applicable)

If you’ve disconnected the AC, it’s time to turn it back on. Go back to the gray box with a black or red handle in your garage and turn on the AC disconnect.

Step 9 – Turn On Your Inverter

The final step in the reset process is to power up your inverter. Turn on your inverter by switching the toggle to the “On” position.
